Not too many hours have passed since the HTC One Google Play edition started receiving the Android 4.4 KitKat update from Google, and now the stock Android variant of the Galaxy S4 is getting the much-awaited update as well, in the usual over-the-air fashion. If you ever doubted Google’s promise of providing timely updates Google Play Edition devices, well, those doubts can now be put to rest.
For those unaware, Android 4.4 KitKat brings faster performance and multitasking, along with reduced RAM consumption, a redesigned navigation and status bar with white icons instead of blue ones, in-built printing and tap-to-pay NFC support, a new dialer app that can grab caller information from Google’s cloud, an immersive mode that allows apps to use the entire screen for displaying content, and the usual under-the-hood improvements that are a part and parcel of every Android update. The new Google Experience Launcher continues to remain exclusive to the Nexus 5, but that will hopefully not be the case for too long.
As always, the update will be trickling out to more and more users in the coming days, though as with the HTC One Google Play edition, it should be a relatively quick process considering the US-only availability of the device. Doing a manual check in the Settings » About phone » System updates menu is something you can do if the update hasn’t arrived on your handset yet, though that won’t exactly do much good.
