Qualcomm has just announced the availability of the Toq smartwatch in the U.S. with a price tag of $349, which is relatively pricier than the poorly received Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Although the Qualcomm Toq offers much better functionality out of the box compared to the Galaxy Gear, we don’t think the pricing will be well received by the masses. However, the Qualcomm Toq is a niche device and we don’t have a lot of viable smartwatch options apart from Pebble, so there’s some hope for Qualcomm.
The smartwatch is compatible with any device running Android 4.0.3 and up, and is capable of showing text messages, emails and also allows users to reject or answer phone calls right within the device. Qualcomm claims a battery life of 2 days despite being on all the time, which is great for a companion accessory. It sports a 1.55 inch Mirasol display which provides ample visibility even in broad daylight.
Customers can get their hands on the smartwatch beginning from December 2, so there’s still some waiting left. At $349, the Toq might not be as popular as Qualcomm expects, but it’s certainly a better bet than the Galaxy Gear.
