Allwinner A80 Octa Core Details Revealed

Just recently MediaTek launched its true octa core MT6592 chip however Allwinner is trying to steal the limelight by providing details on its A80 8-core chip. The race to provide a better octa core processor is really heating up this time as industry experts say that A80 could very well provide a threat to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chip.

Allwinner isn’t a popular name in the semiconductor industry however the company has been providing chips that are usually being used by low cost Android devices.  If you own a cheap China branded Android smartphone or tablet then chances are it is using an Allwinner chip.

Just like any other company in the industry Allwinner plans to increase its market share and it hopes that the A80 chip is the answer. The company just revealed a few details surrounding this chip.

The Allwinner A80 will use a big.LITTLE configuration just like the Mediatek MT6592. This configuration allows device to run a specific number of cores (typically used to increase battery life) or run all 8 cores simultaneously (when maximum performance is needed). Unlike the MT6592 which uses 8 Cortex-A7 cores the A80 uses four ARM Cortex-A15 cores and four Cortex-A7 cores. This gives it more power than most of the competition. A company representative also said that this chip will support several features. We are not sure what these features are yet since it hasn’t been disclosed.

What we do know about this chip is that it will definitely provide a bleeding edge performance. Battery life may be a problem however the company might have a solution to this.

Aside from this octa core processor the company is also working on an A70 chip. This is a quad core chip that uses 2 x ARM Cortex A15 and 2 x ARM Cortex A7 cores. There’s also an upcoming 64-bit SoC based on the ARMv8 Cortex-A57 and Cortex-A53 which also uses a big.LITTLE configuration. The company is also preparing less powerful chips that are meant to be used on low cost Android devices.
