According to a report from GigaOM, Google might be looking to ditch the steadily declining Google TV branding in favor of a newer attractive name like “Android TV“. This could be part of a complete revamp of the product as Google TV hasn’t really been successful in the markets. Its availability has been limited to a few countries as it is, and the lack of software support from Google hasn’t made things any easier. Third party manufacturers have newer versions of Android running on their set top boxes, which provide a more uniform experience of Android compared to a product like Google TV. So Google has to do a lot more than just rebrand the product.
This new rebranded version of Google TV could be announced later this month along with the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4. It is being said that Google employees are referring to this new project as “Google services for TV” as well as “Android TV” separately, giving credence to the report. Google’s Chromecast HDMI dongle currently acts as a medium to bring the user’s web content onto their living room, which has made the Google TV platform somewhat obsolete.
