SolidRun’s $45 CuBox-i Mini Pc Runs Android And Linux

SolidRun is a company founded in 2011 that’s best known for their low power miniature computer and media center called the CuBox. The company has recently announced a new line of CuBox-i models which use the Freescale i.MX6 single, dual, and quad-core processors with prices starting at $45 going all the way up to $120.

What makes the CuBox-i amazing is that it has a size of only two square inches which is just small enough to fit in a pocket. Despite its small size it is able to run Android 4.2.2 or a full version of Linux. It comes with several features such as USB, Wi-Fi, HDMI, S/PDIF, IR, eSATA, GbE, and Bluetooth interface (depending on the model). The device can be used for several functions such as an XBMC entertainment platform, miniature cloud computer, thin client, or media player for digital signage. Rabeeh Khoury, CTO of SolidRun, said that “Given the open source SDK and tons of available software packages, our computers can be used in a huge range of scenarios limited only by your imagination; ranging from embedded, multimedia, education, cloud client, HMI and many other fields, as well as all the fun projects you always dreamed of.”

The Freescale i.MX6 isn’t as popular as other Cortex-A9 processors such as that of the Tegra 3 or Samsung Exynos however it is still a popular choice for these types of devices since it offers manufacturers flexibility.
