Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch leaked photos not final

Alleged Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch leaked photos have recently been published by Venturebeat during the weekend. However, a new report claims that the photos are not of the final device, but merely of a prototype. The smartwatch that will be unveiled in New York and Berlin will have a different appearance, according to Gigaom’s insider sources.

The same source reveals more information about the upcoming device will arrive with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. It will have the operating system’s keyboard features disabled. Likewise, it will have no built-in browser, and would require a smartphone that can tether to the Internet for browsing. It will display notifications full-screen, except for Facebook and Twitter notifications, which are supposedly not working on the prototype device. Support for Bluetooth LE will be available, making the wearable device compatible with both Android and iOS devices that offer Bluetooth LE. Making phone calls using the device is possible. The battery life is estimated to last around 10 to 24 hours, depending on the usage.

GigaOM recaps some of the possible features and specifications of the device. These include a 2.5-inch high-quality, full color OLED display with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels, a 1.5GHz Samsung Exynos 4212 dual core processor, Mali-400 MP4 GPU, Near Field Communication, a camera, microphone, and speakers in the watch strap, as well as an an accelerometer and several other sensors. Among those that have been rumored are a heart rate sensor and a calorie tracker. To load apps onto the device, one would need a Samsung device which has an app store for the smartwatch. An earlier report also indicated that Samsung will sell two storage variants of the smartwatch: one with 6GB and another with 8GB.

We won’t have to wait for too long until we can confirm these specifications, as IFA 2013 is happening in just a few days. In the meantime, be sure to check out Robin and Ollie’s opinions on smartwatches and wearable tech.
