LG and Samsung are in a race to create the first flexible display smartphone, says a new report from South Korea. The same report suggests that such devices could be the LG Vu 3 as well as a variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

The LG Vu 3 is an upcoming device that is bound to be released in the fourth quarter of the year, possibly even next month. On the other hand, the flexible display variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is said to be also scheduled for a fourth quarter release, and may also arrive in October. If such rumors are accurate, then it all goes down to the chosen launch dates.

LG Vu 3 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 3

The LG Vu 3 is expected to feature a 5.2 inch display whereas the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a 5.7-inch display. Both devices have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset. The latest information says that the Vu 3 has Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but this may still be updated to Android 4.3 in time for the release. Meanwhile, the recently-unveiled Note 3 comes with Android 4.3. At this point, it is difficult to compare the two since information is scant regarding the Vu 3, but in general, they both seem to be powerful devices that would be even more interesting with bendable displays.

Other devices had been rumored to offer flexible displays, such as the Samsung Galaxy Gear. However, so far, none of such devices have made it into the market. The Samsung Galaxy Gear had been recently unveiled during IFA 2013, and it did not sport a flexible display.

Future plans: LG and Samsung

Both LG and Samsung have previously commented however, that they do want to manufacture devices with said displays in the future. Last month, it was reported that the two companies will kick off the mass production of flexible displays in November, with Samsung producing around one and a half million of such panels per month, and LG with roughly 500,000 per month. Which manufacturer would you like to have the race for the first flexible display smartphone?
