Amazon Officially Announces The Kindle Fire HDX

Amazon in a late night press conference this Tuesday announced its new line of tablets called the Kindle Fire HDX. There are currently two tablets under this line, one with a 7-inch display and the other with an 8.9-inch display. Both tablets are significantly more powerful and lighter than previous generation Kindle tablets. They are also priced very low that they provide a threat to the dominance of the iPad and other Android tablets.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos introduced both devices Tuesday saying that it is completely unique. The Kindle Fire HDX lineup takes advantage of the company’s large cloud computing and customer service infrastructure and even has a 24/7 live help feature.

Bezos further said that “these are powerhouse tablets. We added the latest graphics engine, doubled the memory, and tripled the processing power with the most advanced 2.2 GHz quad-core processor. Our HDX displays bring together exceptional pixel density (up to 339 ppi), perfect 100% sRGB color accuracy, improved brightness, and dynamic image contrast. You also get up to 11 hours of battery life—17 hours when you’re reading.”

The Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch tablet uses Fire OS 3.0 “Mojito”. This operating system is Android based that Amazon has tweaked to take advantage of some of their technology.  Some of the features added to the OS include cloud services, a content-forward user interface, built-in media libraries, productivity apps, low-level platform enhancements that integrate Amazon’s digital content and improve performance.

This model has one of the fastest processors in a 7-inch device which when combined with its 2 GB RAM assures of a smooth operation. The 4G LTE variant is able to connect to the AT&T and Verizon network.

This model starts shipping by October 15.

Aside from having a large display that has a better resolution, the 8.9-inch version also has an 8 MP rear-facing camera that can be used to record videos and take high quality photos. This device also uses the Fire OS 3.0 “Mojito” that allows it to easily take advantages of Amazon’s services. The $G LTE version of this model is able to use the AT&T or Verizon network.

This model starts shipping by November 7.
