YouTube gets a major update bringing new UI and features

YouTube 5.0

Google has just rolled out a new update to YouTube for Android, taking the app to version 5.0. This is not another incremental update as it brings an all new user interface and a few gesture controls making it one of the most exciting updates to the app so far. It’s a slow rollout, so don’t be surprised if you haven’t received the update yet. The most notable addition to YouTube is the pop up window which lets you watch your video in a small box while you browse for other videos. The controls for full screen mode have also been changed with a dedicated button now to turn captions on and toggle video quality (HD or standard).

The app also packs a changed UI with a card like stacking of recently uploaded videos of the channels you follow. The overall usability has certainly improved and watching YouTube videos is a lot more fun now. Lastly, the app now has a new icon with the old YouTube icon ditched in favor of a simple red icon with a play button etched on it. The developers have clearly worked hard on this new update and it clearly shows. If you have managed to get your hands on the update, let us know what you think.
