Samsung Galaxy S3 Displays Memory Full Message [Troubleshooting Guide]

When the Samsung Galaxy S3 runs out of memory, I’m talking about its RAM, it’s either you will receive the message “Memory Full” or “Out Of Memory.” When this happens, it means a lot of things and the most common are:

  • You can no longer run another app.
  • Your phone will run very slow with frequent freezing and rebooting.
  • You cannot make a call because the phone hangs.
  • Error messages popup more frequently.
  • You were running a lot of apps / services consuming your phone’s entire memory.

Although, we did receive tons of emails about this issue, here’s one message from our reader that explains the problem well.

Hey Guys,

My phone, a Samsung Galaxy S3, started displaying the message “Memory Full.” I’m not really a tech-savvy person and I use my phone for business but I am really helpless right now. I don’t know what to do.

When the message shows my phone will run incredibly slow, I can’t open my email because the email app closes by itself. It seems like a chain of errors because when it shows up, other error messages also show up like com.process.google.app stopped working or something like that.

Though I’m not looking at specs when buying a phone, I’m pretty sure Samsung’s flagship smartphone is very powerful, at least, that’s what my friends kept telling me. I have bought a new iPhone if not because of my friends who recommended it to me.

Basically, I need your help and would surely appreciate any suggestions you will provide. Thanks for reading my email.

Troubleshooting Procedure

The following is a series of steps you could follow to troubleshoot the problem. In this case, the first step will be to free up some space in the device’s RAM while the proceeding steps will address the underlying factors that contribute to the main problem.

Clearing Memory 

  1. Go to the Home page and hold the Home key for about 2 seconds until the Recent Apps screen shows.
  2. You must be seeing a list of apps; swipe each one either to the left or to the right to close them.
  3. Now tap on Task Manager.
  4. Tap RAM tab. (If the phone displays “Memory Full” message, the “used”/”total” numbers should be very close to each other.)
  5. Tap Clear Memory. (The phone will delete all data cached in its memory that are not currently being used.)

If the “used” amount does not decrease after flushing the RAM, proceed to steps below.

Ditch Some Apps / Services 

While it is always so easy to uninstall an app, it’s complicated to find which one causes the problem.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Battery. (Aside from the core services, you would find apps that eat up battery more than others, which could also use more RAM. Make a mental list of apps you could find here.)
  4. Go back to Settings, tap Application Manager.
  5. Swipe to the left to choose Running tab.
  6. Now find the apps you found earlier under Battery Settings (except core services) and force close them. (You would need to force close each one of them.)
  7. After doing this, clear the memory of your phone again.
  8. Reboot device.

Other things you could do to minimize the use of RAM in your phone is remove unnecessary widgets, don’t use wallpaper, and delete unnecessary Home screens.
