Samsung released its first octa core Exynos processor through their Galaxy S4 model a few months back. While the specs of this chip are impressive the company has announced a new and improved octa core processor that has 20 percent more processing power and twice the graphical processor. Meet the Exynos 5420 which the company is detailing further.
The Exynos 5420 is designed for the next generation smartphone and offers enhanced graphical capabilities as well as energy efficiency. This chip comes with its own set of power-saving features that allows it to run applications while conserving battery life.
One of the new additions to this processor is the use of an integrated ARM Mali T628 GPU. This allows it to support 3D graphics and is twice as fast as the previous Exynos 5410 chip. One other important feature of this GPU is that it is capable of GPU compute functionality, a feature previously found only on PCs. This means that it can share on the computing workload done by the main CPU. This makes the processing time faster.

The Exynos 5420 is composed of four 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 cores. The design of this chip is optimized for a big.LITTLE configuration. This configuration allows for a 20 percent better processor performance compared to its predecessor yet has 70 percent greater energy efficiency. This is achieved since the system intelligently switches between the Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A7 processors depending on the workload.
For gamers who are into maximum FPS in their games then the Cortex-A15 is there to provide you with the much needed power. If you are just using light applications then the Cortex-A7 will kick in and do their job.
One other feature of this chip that will please photography aficionados is that it comes integrated with Mobile Image Compression (MIC). This technology makes it possible to use less power when bringing photos from the memory to the screen for processing. Editing images will now consume less battery life.
