ChangHong Z9 smartphone is the Chinese version of Moto X

Motorola tried something different in the age of the specs war, by deciding to ship the Moto X as a mid-range phone (in terms of specs) with impressive performance, oodles of battery life, impressive software and hardware customisation options.

The ChangHong Z9 is China’s answer to the Moto X, sort of, it offers the same ideals, dropping the huge specs sheet for more impressive battery life and less clutter. In a time where Huawei and ZTE try and push out new cheap smartphones for the Chinese market, ChangHong has a simple idea, offer a phone that will last days, not hours.

Specs for the ChangHong Z9 are quite average, starting with a 5.5-inch 1280 x 720 display, 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The big feature is the battery, at 5,000mAh, it is the biggest on the market, set to last a few days even under heavy usage.

We wonder if this is the start of the battery life wars, we have yet to really see any smartphone (apart from the Moto X & ChangHong Z9) compete on battery life, even if it means dimming down the display and slowing down the processor speed. The question is will the end users appreciate a little jolt in performance or a few more pixels or will they enjoy 18 hours more battery life.

Another question is how the ChangHong Z9 will stick to 9mm size, the battery is two times as big as a normal 2000-2500mAh battery, so it needs to fit into a larger case, unless the company has somehow made drastic optimisation for the battery size.
