A new report citing anonymous sources familiar with the Amazon’s plans says that the company is planning to refresh their Kindle Fire lineup for 2013. With Barnes & Noble announcing that they will not be making Nook tablets and Samsung not doing well right now it looks like Amazon is poised to dominate the tablet market with their new devices.
One study shows that the Kindle’s are the second most desired devices right after Apple’s iPad. Although Samsung surpassed Amazon and claimed second spot in terms of tablet shipments worldwide Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos plans to debut new devices in the coming months to reclaim their market share.
A recent report by BGR says that there will be at least three new Kindle Fire devices coming. These will be released ahead of the holiday schedule. While this isn’t official yet the website has reported on several Kindle Fire releases previously and got them right.
The first refresh is a replacement to the 7 inch Kindle Fire model. The company is currently selling this model at $159. While the overall display size will remain the same the company is said to increase its resolution to 1,280 x 800 pixels. This is the same resolution that is on the Kindle Fire HD. The current 7 inch Kindle Fire only has a resolution of 1,024 x 600. Aside from the bump in resolution, the refresh will most likely have the same specs as its predecessor.
The company is also said to release a new version of their Kindle Fire HD. This device is also going to get an upgrade in its display. It is reportedly getting an increase of 1,920 x 1,200-pixel resolution which is up from the current 1,280 x 800-pixels of the current model. The size will still remain the same at 7 inches.
The final device that Amazon is expected to release this year is a refresh to their 8.9 inch Kindle Fire HD device. This device already has an impressive 1,920 x 1,200 pixel resolution but the company plans to improve this even more by increasing it to 2,560 x 1,600. At this resolution, it will even be better than Apple’s 9.7 inch Retina display which only has a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels.
All upcoming models are said to sport a new design. While the current Kindle Fire models has a back that slopes smoothly toward the edges the new models are said to have a more angular design which has a flat slope toward the edges. The physical buttons are also repositioned from its current location at the side to its new location at the sloping part at the back. The upcoming refresh models are also said to be lighter than their current counterparts.
Sources say that these new devices will launch this fall, probably by September, and will be priced more or less the same as the current Kindle Fire models.
