Samsung has officially introduced a new hybrid device in the company’s 2013 Samsung Premiere launch held in London. The Samsung Ativ Q is both an ultrabook and a tablet and comes with a dual boot capability. As an ultrabook it will run on Windows 8 while as a tablet it runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The convenient part is that there’s no need to reboot the device to switch between operating systems.

The Samsung Ativ Q is primarily a Windows device. Running the Android part is achieved with the help of a virtual machine that runs on top of Windows. This allows the device to be able to instantly switch between operating systems. You will be able to access your files and folders between both systems. As far as the performance goes, running Android on top of Windows doesn’t seem to have a noticeable slowness but the experience isn’t smooth either.
As a tablet the Ativ Q is a rather large device with its 13.3 inch display. When you lift the display a keyboard is revealed underneath and when you fold the display further and lock it in place you will be able to type with the keyboard and swipe at the screen. The body is made of magnesium which should make it quite durable.
One impressive feature of this device is its resolution of 3200×1800 at 275 PPI. This is even better than the 9.7 inch Retina iPad that only has 264 PPI. The screen looks very sharp and colors are bright and vivid.
You will be able to use the Ativ Q in four modes which depends on the environment. As a tablet you just have to lay the display over the keyboard. If you want to use it as a laptop then you just have to raise the display. You can also flip the display around placing the device in stand mode if you want to watch a movie. Finally you can also float and adjust the display around to get the best possible viewing angle.
Samsung has brought two separate systems into one device with the Ativ Q. This would be a good device to have for people looking for versatility.
