Rumor has it that Sony may be preparing an improved version of their rugged flagship smartphone the Xperia Z with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. We base this rumor on a tweet by a Russian blogger @eldarmurtazin who tweeted that he was actually ‘Trying updated version of xperia z with snapdragon 800.’ He went further to post ‘Its really fast :)’.
The current Sony Xperia Z is powered by a 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 SoC which is not as powerful as the Snapdragon 600 and 800 that other high end smartphones by Sony’s competitors including Samsung and HTC come with. But then, the Xperia Z was released back in February 9th and the Snapdragon S4 was still the most powerful processor by Qualcomm at the time the Xperia Z was in development.
Eldar Murtazin is a popular Russian tech geek supposedly focusing on mobile devices whose past predictions have been largely hit-and-miss but there are good reasons to believe that this time, he may be right. Murtazin claims that the new revamped Xperia Z is in development and that it will come with a few other improvements besides the processor including a new better LCD3 screen, similar to that of HTC One, but it is unlikely that Sony will equip this screen on the commercial version of the refreshed Xperia Z.
Since the launch of HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4, the Sony Xperia Z has been pushed back in almost every ranking of high end Android smartphones largely due to the processing power and Sony seems to be working to get back in the game without coming up with an entirely new device. The company has scheduled a couple of media events including one on June 25th in Munich and another on July 4th in Paris where it is expected to launch a new 6.44 inch phablet Xperia Z Ultra (also known as ZU or Togari). Whether it will also unveil the new improved Xperia Z is still unknown, but if the rumor is true, then it is very likely.
It would be in the best interest of Sony to launch the new Sony Xperia Z with a better processor to take on the current smartphone leaders, but if you are a Sony fan or are looking forward to a better Xperia Z, take this rumor with a grain of salt as there is no concrete information to support it. If it is true, this would not be the first time Sony has revamped a phone – case on point being the Xperia Arc which was improved and launched as the Xperia S.
We just have to wait for their two next events and hope they confirm this rumor.
