Google Is Working On Technology That Will Eliminate Internet Child Porn

One of the best places where information flows freely is the Internet. Sadly though, aside from containing useful information it also comes with materials that exploit children. Google has announced that they aim to fight child pornography on the web by eradicating child abuse images online.

The increase in the number of images and videos of child abuse has had a rapid increase these past few years. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Cybertipline has reported that in 2011 they have received 17.3 million images and videos of exploited children. This is four times the number recorded in 2007.

Jacquelline Fuller, Director of Google Giving, wrote in a blog post that “Recently, we’ve started working to incorporate encrypted ‘fingerprints’ of child sexual abuse images into a cross-industry database. This will enable companies, law enforcement, and charities to better collaborate on detecting and removing these images, and to take action against the criminals.”

The company said that their new database will be operational within the year and will allow child porn images that have already been flagged to be purged from the web. The database will also be shared with other search engine providers and child protection organizations.

The aim of this new technology is not to make any flagged image searchable in participating search engines or web hosting providers. Removing the images is done automatically by the computer without the need for any human intervention.

Google has also started a $2 million Child Protection Technology Fund which is available for use by independent software developers to come up with new tools to combat child pornography.

Susie Hargreaves, chief executive officer of the Internet Watch Foundation, which is part-funded by Google, said that “This announcement is inspiring for those who are at the forefront of tackling child sexual abuse content. We know that the best way to tackle what is some of the most horrific content online is by working with others from all over the world to combat this on a global platform. These funds, made available internationally, will no doubt allow international experts to target images and videos of children being sexually abused with the best technology based on the most technically progressive ideas.”

Google has been active in fighting child exploitation since 2006 when the company joined the Technology Coalition. This is a coalition of companies whose aim is to stop child pornography. Since becoming a member, the company has been helping organizations all over the world in fighting child pornography as well as locating missing children.
