With the inherent US availability hiccups now completely behind the Galaxy S4, it’s time for Samsung to already look towards the future. The GS5 is probably not in production yet and the Note 3 is also a little way down the road, but that doesn’t mean Americans will not be getting a couple of other Galaxy launches in the next few months.
In fact, if we are to trust recently emerged rumors, there are several high-end-ish Sammy phones coming soon, including the Mega 5.8 and 6.3, but also the GS4 Active and Zoom. Now the Active seems to have been confirmed to launch on AT&T, though the pricing and availability details are still awfully blurry.
The news of the thing’s release on Ma Bell is of course not official yet, but it does come by way of Twitter via trusted leaker @evleaks, so chances are it’s as legit as… possible.
But what exactly is this Galaxy S4 Active also known as the SGH-I537? Well, we’re not sure yet, but it’s probably just a sort of rugged, water and dust proof version of the regular S4. Okay, maybe “just” is not the perfect phrasing here, because honestly, that sounds like Samsung’s best idea in ages.
And based on a leaked user agent profile, it does look like there are no corners cut in the making of the Active, which is bound to sport the same 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution display as its “cousin” and run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
All the other S4 treats, including the zippy Snapdragon 600 CPU, 2 gigs of RAM and 13 MP camera, are in the cards, which could well make the S4 Active the best of both worlds – solid, reliable and rugged, but also snappy and packing state of the art hardware.
But what’s the catch here? Probably pricing. Just think about it, if you take the already pricey S4 and add water and dust protection, what do you get? A $900 or so worth handheld.
In other news, a second AT&T-bound Samsung phone has been leaked yesterday, carrying the model number SGH-I217 and the alleged market name of “Zest”. As you can guess from that number combo, the I217 is likely to be a few stories lower on the Android food chain compared with the I537, aka the S4 Active.
The only other detail known at this time about the Zest is the thing will sport a WVGA, 800 x 480 pix res display. Boring, I know, but let’s wait and see the whole picture before completely dismissing the thing.
