The Nvidia Shield Android open platform gaming console paid the FCC a visit, the final step it needs to be cleared for shipping the devices in a few weeks.
The FCC filing shows the device’s original codename, Project Thor. However, it does not reveal any new information about the handheld. All the specifications about the Shield have already been published in its official website.
Nvidia, it would be recalled, began taking pre-orders for the device on May 17 through its website, and retailers including Newegg, Canada Computer, and GameStop. Micro Computer will soon join this list of sellers, as well.
Harnessing the power of the NVIDIA Tegra 4 Quad Core Mobile Processor with 2GB RAM, the Nvidia Shield promises to be different from all other gaming portables in the market. Also onboard is 16GB of flash memory. Its display is a 5 inch 1280×720 (294 ppi) Multi-Touch Retinal Quality panel while its battery offers 28.8 Watt Hours. Android Jelly Bean is its operating system. The connectivity options, meanwhile, are 802.11n 2×2 Mimo Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, and GPS. For an immersive gaming experience, it also packs Integrated Stereo Speakers with Built-in Microphone.
Among the Nvidia Shield’s input controls are: A/B/X/Y buttons, Android Home and Back buttons, D-pad
Dual analog joysticks, Left/right analog triggers, Left/right bumpers, NVIDIA power/multi-function button,
Start button, and Volume control. The device also comes with 3 Axis Gyro and 3 Axis Accelerometer motion sensors.
Out of the box, the handheld comes pre-installed with the following software: Expendable: Rearmed, Google Play, Hulu Plus, Sonic 4 Episode II THD, TegraZone, and TwitchTV.
Nvidia recommends the Shield’s users to try out both Android and PC games that would showcase the powerful capabilities of the console. Some of the Android games are Arma Tactics, Burn Zombie Burn, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Hamilton’s Great Adventure THD, and Tainted Keep. Meanwhile, among the PC games, which may be enjoyed via a PC Streaming function, are Batman: Arkham City, Borderlands 2, Metro Last Light, and Resident Evil 6.
As for its dimensions, the Nvidia Shield spans 158mm (w) x 135mm (D) x 57mm (H) and weighs 579 grams.
