Pantech Vega Iron Is Official With Super-Slim Bezels and Snapdragon 600 CPU [Updated]

Watch out, Samsung, beware, LG, and careful there, HTC! There’s a new Full HD smartphone in the house and it’s targeted against your Galaxy S4, Optimus G Pro and One. The name is Iron, Pantech Vega Iron.

Pantech Vega Iron

Just as rumored, the 1080p 720p 5-incher has been unveiled in South Korea earlier today, being slated for releases on KT, LG U+ and SK Telecom “soon”. No words on pricing just yet and there’s also nothing on a launch outside Korea, but chances are Pantech will at least try to make this jewel a global hit.

As the name suggests, the newest member of the Vega family is tough as nails, rocking a sleek body entirely made out of metal. The design is by far Vega Iron’s most important selling point, even if rumors of this being the world’s first true bezel-less phone haven’t proven legit.

Still, the vertical borders are extremely narrow, measuring just 2.4 mm on each side of the screen. The horizontal bezels are a little thicker, but all in all the Vega Iron just breathes elegance and premium looks through all its pores.

And the super-slim borders are not just there to make you look cool while holding this bad boy, because they help the screen-to-body size ratio hit an almost record-breaking 75.5% (Sony’s Xperia ZL remains number one, with 75.8%). In layman’s terms, that means over three quarters of the phone’s front is all screen, which is pretty amazing.

But let’s get down to the hardware too, because only great looks can’t make the Vega Iron a true Galaxy S4 contender. Fortunately, the 5-incher is no pushover performance-wise either, packing a 1.7 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 CPU and 2 GB of RAM beneath its hood.

As far as we can tell (we’re not very fluent in Korean), the Vega Iron will come in just one flavor, with 32 GB of on-board storage. There will be microSD support for expanding the memory with up to 2 TB (!!!), while on the back you’ll get a state-of-the-art 13 MP snapper.

On the software side, the 5-incher runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for now, with a planned 4.2 upgrade for the near future. The connectivity options include all the works, from 4G LTE to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, while the only major flaw we can detect at the moment is a mediocre 2,150 mAh battery.

We can’t say we’re too shocked, seeing how slender Pantech’s Vega Iron is, but it’s certainly one department where Samsung’s GS4 is out of this fellow’s league, with a much more comfy 2,600 mAh ticker.

Regardless of that, there’s no question the Vega Iron is one fantastically-looking slab of metal, with sensational hardware almost all-around, so it would be a terrible shame if Pantech decided to keep it exclusive to South Korea. Can you hear us, Pantech? We want this!

Update: It appears we did get a few things lost in translation here, as the Vega Iron sports a 1,280 x 720 pixels (aka not Full HD) resolution display after all. Bummer, we know, but the outstanding design and great screen-to-body size ratio still make the 5-incher a fairly intriguing device.
