With so many companies releasing android smartphones today, you would think that every market niche has been covered and you can find any kind of phone you want. CAT, the company that manufacturers heavy machinery, has dived into the Android fray and this time came up with a whole new kind of machine – an android phone. The company announced the most durable android phone designed to take any kind of abuse during this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Although there are all kinds of waterproof, dustproof and even scratch-resistant Android phones in the market now, this is the only kind of rugged phone that can be dropped from 1.8 meters height on a hard surface and can still be picked up as if nothing happened. The phone can also be submerged in water for up to 30 minutes without damage. Bullitt Mobile, a global company licensed by CAT, will offer the CAT B15 phone.
Most rugged smartphones on the market often have very limited features – with functionality being sacrificed for durability, but not the B15. The phone comes with Google’s latest operating system Jelly Bean 4.1 and an impressive dual core 1 GHz MediaTek processor. It also offers wet finger multi-touch capability on its 4 inch 800 x 480 pixels resolution screen. Other specifications include 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB internal storage, a 5 megapixels rear camera, MicroUSB slot, GPS and A-GPS, a battery that offers up to 9 hours talk time and a slot for microSD memory card to expand the storage capacity by up to 32GB.
CAT B15 is pitched for different kinds of phone users, from industrial and construction workers to outdoor adventure seekers such as snowboarders, hikers and bikers. Its durability and capability to withstand abuse is certified IP67. The handset is dustproof, scratchproof, waterproof and is protected with a silver anodized aluminum as well as shock absorbent rubber which reinforces its durability. In addition to this, the phone can remain operational in extreme temperatures – as low 4 degrees below zero and as high as 130 degrees.
Despite all the protection, the CAT B15 is still light for such a rugged device. The phone will be available starting April this year in the US and European markets for a price of €300 (about $392). It is just a b=month’s wait if you are interested in it.
