After so much fuzz about the violating terms and conditions of the famous photo sharing software, Instagram, we never expected it to make the 100 million mark. However, recently we got to know that Instagram has finally crossed the 100 million mark.
According to the photo uploaded by the company, Instagram had over 100 million active users at time the photo was being uploaded. The company was extremely happy with their achievement and the caption on the photo uploaded read,
“Today, we’re excited to announce that there are currently 100,000,000 active users on Instagram. You read that number right—one hundred million people use Instagram every month! We want to take this opportunity to thank every one of you for making this community such an incredible place full of creativity, support and openness. Instagram has always been a fast, beautiful and fun way to share your photos with friends and family, and you have helped make it so much more. This isn’t just a milestone for us as a company, but one for the entire Instagram community. In honor of this, we want to hear your stories. Share your photos of what Instagram means to you and tag them #InstagramMeansToMe so we can hear your voices. We’ll feature some of our favorite photos right here on our account. From our team to the hundred million people who call Instagram home, we say thank you.”
Currently, Instagram has about one fifth of the number of twitter users. However it is worth noting that Instagram has achieved this feat faster than twitter i.e. in about 28 months. It took twitter over 5 years to build their user base to 100 million (2006-2011). Even Facebook, took longer to achieve this feat. The social networking website reached this milestone in about 3 years i.e. 2005 to 2008, faster than twitter but much slower than Intagram.
Last year, Facebook purchased Instagram to integrate its growing photo sharing community with its social networking website. However, the company has not yet benefited from the acquisition, at least not monetarily. But with the Facebook CFO hinting on a new strategy of shifting a part of their business on to its other entities would mean Facebook will most likely integrate more of Instagram features on to its social networking website. And as the Facebook CFO said in the recent Morgan Stanley Technology Conference, that ‘Instagram can be a formidable opponent’, we can expect Facebook to introduce some new features for its users in the future.
