If you live in India or happen to know the country, you would be well aware of the fact that there’s a huge market in the country for budget phones. And this is where manufacturers like Nokia thrived with its Symbian offerings earlier in the day. However, times are different now and things have gotten very competitive. Standing against Nokia is Samsung which also has a great presence in the low-end feature phone segment. But regional companies like Karbonn, Micromax, Lava etc have done a good job at attracting customers and giving them a decent feature rich phone for a relatively lesser price. And of late, these regional companies have been making smartphones with killer specs and selling them for a super attractive price. A hint of that was given when Micromax announced the A100 Canvas in the country which reaped enormous popularity. Just a couple of months ago, the company launched a successor in the form of Canvas 2 in India. But shortly after, the company announced the Canvas HD which was slated to go on sale this month, and the specs of the smartphone were simply remarkable to say the least, especially for its price point. The smartphone packed a 5-inch IPS HD display, a quad core Mediatek MT6589 chipset, an 8MP camera sensor on the back and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Micromax was willing to sell the device for a meager 13,990 Indian Rupees or $260.  And now this bang for the buck smartphone has finally gone on sale in India, and sold out, all within a span of few hours.

This smartphone has been teased for a few weeks now which meant that users were pretty eager to get their hands on the smartphone as soon as possible. And considering the fact that it features a quad core processor with an HD display, the decision to make the buy is a no brainer. The company would like to restock on the smartphone as soon as possible, as the demand is pretty high now. Sadly, the smartphone is only available in India, but we should see regional retailers from other countries follow suit as Chinese chip maker Mediatek produces its low cost quad core chips. Part of the reason why this smartphone is priced this cheap is because it doesn’t take much to make it in the first place. The Mediatek MT6589 quad core chip is very cost efficient which makes it an interesting proposition for regional manufacturers. Currently, big ticket chip makers like Qualcomm and NVIDIA face serious competition from MediaTek as it seems to be the go-to choice of all the regional manufacturers.

In terms of performance though, it won’t suffice to compare the Canvas HD with other quad core offerings like the Nexus 4 or the Galaxy Note II. The simple reason being that the Mediatek chip is based on the low energy ARM Cortex-A7 architecture, which doesn’t provide the raw power which comes with a Samsung Exynos or NVIDIA alternative. However, this doesn’t matter much for the end user as all that people care about is being able to run heavy duty apps and games without a hitch, which is something the Mediatek chip does without any trouble. So when we consider all this, we should expect the device to do even better in the market. We should get to see more such smartphones in the future and let’s hope companies like Samsung and HTC take inspiration from these regional companies, because the market these days is cost driven.
