If you are an iOS developer or Mac developer with your own product, you now have another new way to publicize your apps. Found first at the end of an ad during the Super Bowl, the Cupertino based tech giant has come up with a new domain, AppStore.com, and is giving developers the option to come up with their own vanity URLs to their apps using this new domain. The domain name was first noted by CNET at the end of an ad for the new Star Trek movie. The link in the ad was appstore.com/startrekapp.
CNET also noted that the domain “AppStore.com” was a personal gift to Steve Jobs from Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff back in 2008. When you are submitting your apps to the iTunes App Store or the Mac App Store, you will be given an option to choose your vanity URL on this domain. But what if the vanity URL of your liking has already been taken? Well, you will have to come up with another URL. This info is provided to developers in the Apple Developer Documentation, which was updated on the 31st of last month with the info about the new URLs. The documentation reads:
You can also create easy-to-read links to your app using App Store Short Links, which use the AppStore.com base URL plus a specific form of your app or company name. This provides a simple way for users to find your apps on the App Store directly from your website or marketing campaigns. These short links are ideal for use in offline communications materials like print ads, TV spots, app trailers, radio ads and billboards.
If you are not sure about the exact URL of an app you are looking for, you can just do a general search. For example, if you are looking for a hypothetical app called RingTone Maker and you do not know the exact URL, you can just go to the URL appstore.com/ringtonemaker. And if there is more than one app with the same name, the website provides a page with search results. You can then select the app which you are interested in.
