Apple had previously announced 128 gig version of its 4th gen iPad and the device can now be bought, thus making it the tablet with largest amount of internal memory space.
Phil Schiller, Apple’s marketing chief, gave a little talk for the launch of the 128 GB iPad 4 version:

“With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs. With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.”

The new 128GB version can be bought either in black or white. As far as the pricing goes, it is in par with the storage, in fact it is nearing the price tag of ultrabook territory. The wi-fi model of 128 gig iPad 4 will set you back by $799 whereas you will have to shell out $929 for the iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular model. The device can be bought via Apple Online Store, Apple retail stores or Apple Authorized Resellers. Apple has cleverly selected the launch date as the product has been put up on sale just one week before the Microsoft’s Surface Pro launch.

As far as pricing for other variants of iPad 4 goes, it varies according to the onboard storage capacity. The 16GB goes for $499, 32GB for $599, and 64GB for $699. Price tags of the cellular version of the devices are substantially bumped. The 16GB goes for $629, 32GB for $729, and 64GB for $829.
The 128 gig iPad 4 is so far the most expensive iPad ever released by the Cupertino based company. Is it really worth it? Depends on whether you really require that much of memory. The cost of NAND flash memory that Apple uses in its iPad and other devices are currently much cheaper than before, hence launch of the 128 gig iPad 4 is no accident.

“Apple’s cost per GB in NAND flash is currently around $0.55/GB. Last year it was closer to $0.90/GB,” says IHS’ Andrew Rassweiler. “So it’s clear that pricing has eroded to the point that Apple can afford to offer 2X memory configurations while maintaining the kind of incremental profit margins they were making on the memory upgrades a year ago.”

So basically you’re spending $100 more in order to get a bump in memory which actually costs Apple only $35.20, and that’s in addition to what you’re spending over the other 2 storage upgrades from the cheapest model.

The 128 gig Surface Pro tablet/ laptop hybrid from Microsoft will come with a price tag of $999. From the storage and price point of view, 128gig iPad 4 definitely makes sense to the buyers, and since iPad has got access to a lot of apps, buyers who value that will surely go for Apple’s offering, but my money is on Surface Pro. What’s strikes your fancy?
