Nokia’s new Windows Phone 8 operating system is pretty great. It’s better than previous version, Windows Phone 7.5, in every way. When Microsoft announced that they are going to launch Windows Phone 8, they also said that they will be updating the older Windows Phone 7.5 devices to Windows Phone 7.8.
Windows Phone 7.8 will be having few interface elements and features backported from Windows Phone 8. That should make the users happy as they won’t feel that their phone is outdated. There’s no way to install Windows Phone 8 onto older devices due to some hardware limitations. Anyways, what’s sad is that it has been months since the announcement and Microsoft hasn’t released the software update yet. What’s even more saddening is that the software update is ready, but isn’t being rolled out, in fact there are new devices shipping with Windows Phone 7.8 as their operating system, so there is no point in not distributing the update to older devices.
Recently, Nokia had confirmed that they indeed had the update ready for rolling out, but what is making them wait is the green signal from the software developer.
According to folks at PocketGamer.biz, Nokia has told them:
…the roll out of 7.8 to existing devices remains in Microsoft’s hands, though the firm’s Windows Phone 7 currently shipping to retail – such as the Lumia 800 – have the update pre-loaded.
Good news is that the update should be out in matter of weeks, and a couple of Nokia’s European divisions have confirmed the same. Nokia Spain has reassured that Windows Phone 7.8 should hit Nokia Lumia smartphones by the end of January.
“With Windows Phone 7.8 beginning to ship pre-loaded on Nokia Lumia smartphones, we will naturally be deploying the software to our factories for product rollout. At present we have no more information we can give about wider availability of the update for phones running Windows Phone 7.5.”-Nokia
The confirmations are coming from company’s twitter and facebook handles, which are pretty trustworthy, but not 100% reliable. May be the company is trying to calm down its users since at some point Microsoft has to give green signal as the update should have come long ago.
The features that will be making to legacy Nokia Lumia phones in the upcoming update will include:
• New homescreen experience with more room for your Live Tiles. Now resizable.
• Set the Bing image of the day as the Lock Screen wallpaper.
• Pocket and child Lock screen Security
• 20 new accent theme colours
• Bluetooth Share (for DRM free media files)
• Cinemagraph add-on to create blend and photo and movie-like animation, creating photos that are alive
• New camera lenses to remove unwanted objects in your photos such as passers-by or people on the edge of the shot the spoil the photo.
• Updated Contacts Transfer application
• Updates Contact Share application
• Ringtone Maker application
Nokia Spain has made a point that though the software is ready for launch, it would be up to the carrier to decide when it will be made available. What are your thoughts on this?
