V987 Is ZTE’s 5-Inch Phone For The Mid-Range Segment

ZTE seems to have great news for those who want the Grand S smartphone but do not want to pay for what it costs. A new smartphone that is now known as the V987 comes with a similar design as the Grand S, but comes with lower set of specifications and will supposedly come with as a price tag that is aimed at the mid-range market segment.

The device was already spotted in the Chinese regulatory database, the country’s regulating body that is akin to the United States’ Federal Communications Commission.

The device also sports a 5-inch display like the Grand S, but its screen has a lower resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels. For comparison, the Grand S has a 1080p full HD display.

The V987 is also less powerful than the Grand S, running on a 1.2 GHz Mediatek MT6589 chip instead of the 1.5 GHz S4 Pro CPU which comes with the Grand S.

Its RAM is also downsized. While the Grand S offers 2GB of RAM, its cheaper sibling only packs 1GB of system memory.

Likewise, instead of the 13-megapixel rear-facing camera on the Grand S, the V987 will sport an 8-megapixel one.

Both handsets, however, come with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box.

Lastly, the ZTE V987’s thicker body allows it to be powered by a 2,500 mAh removable battery while the battery capacity on the Grand S is only 1,780mAh.

It is expected that the device will not be sold as the V987 but come with a different, more memorable name once it gets released.

The V987 should join the U956, another handset from the same electronics company that also comes with a 720p 5-inch display, 8-megapixel camera, and possibly a quad-core processor.

Meanwhile over in the ZTE U956 camp, the design is very different with the handset sporting ZTE’s older looks along with the same 720p 5-inch screen and 8MP camera found in the V987.

Photos and details of the U956 cropped up on GizChina from an unknown source who also claimed the handset would pack a quad-core processor. It is rumored that this smartphone, for its part, will retail at around US$240.
