Samsung Galaxy S3 Errors, User Problems, Solutions and Workarounds – Part 4

Posted on Jan 29 2013 - 9:45am by Harold Hisona

This is the fourth part of our Samsung Galaxy S3 errors series. In this post, we provide solutions and workarounds to concerns of our readers. There were already three articles that were published dealing with most common errors and issues Samsung’s flagship phone may encounter.

Galaxy S3 Homescreen Freezes Momentarily

Reader’s Problem: Sometimes whenever I’m in an app, let’s say the music player, and I push the Home button, the phone shows a couple apps on that Home screen and its frozen. After like 10 seconds it reloads the Home page and goes to the main page with the weather thingy on it. Is there a reason it’s doing this?

Problem Description:  While Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with better TouchWiz UI, owners are sometimes bugged with lags and freezes. Owners oftentimes experience this issue when pressing the Home button; it’s either the phone lags or freezes for a few seconds. There is no error code or something but it is annoying.

Solutions: There are two things owners can do about this problem. The first is to clear data of TouchWiz app and second, to reset the phone to its factory reset.

1st Solution: Menu => System Settings => Application Manager => TW => Clear Data

2nd Solution:(BACKUP YOUR DATA BEFORE DOING THIS) Menu => Settings => Backup and Reset => Factory Data Reset => Reset Device => Delete All => Reboot

If doing the first solution fixes the problem, you don’t have to do the second.

Galaxy S3 Stock Message App Crashes

Reader’s Problem: Me and my friend are having this problem after updating our Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 to 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Premium Suite. Sometimes when I am sending messages to my friend, suddenly a notification  pops up saying messaging app has stopped working. After that when I open messaging app again, all of my messages were gone. I need to reboot my phone every time to make them re-appear. Please help me fix this problem.

Problem Description: This is a common problem not just to the Galaxy S3 but to all Android devices irrespective of their brand and specs. Well, of course, devices with higher specs seldom experience app crashes but the point is, any Android user may experience this. Fortunately, it is not a serious problem and can easily be fixed. There are three possible ways to solve this issue aside from the reboot.

Note: Make sure you have backed up all your messages before you undertake any of the following solutions.

1st Solution: Android’s stock messaging app often crashes when there is too much data in it. So, the first thing you need to do is delete old messages in your inbox to make it lighter for the app to load. The fewer the messages in the inbox, the better.

2nd Solution: If this issue couldn’t be resolved with simple deleting of messages, you’ve got to take it to the next level. Go to  Settings => Apps => All => Messaging => Clear Data.

3rd Solution: In case the first two solutions aren’t enough to fix this problem, this one has a better chance to make things work for good. Head to nu => Settings => Backup and Reset => Factory Data Reset => Reset Device => Delete All => Reboot.

Galaxy S3 Audio Notification Management

Reader’s Concern: My BlackBerry (don’t get me wrong, I’m happy I got rid of it) had a sound profile that let me turn off all sounds EXCEPT the phone ringer… this way i could turn off all my e-mail/IM/Facebook/etc notifications but not miss a call if I am needed in the middle of the night (for my work).

Problem Description: Not every Galaxy S3 owner knows the importance of having pre-defined profile that they can set with a tap or two. People whose jobs and livelihood depend on constant communication may be the ones who badly need these profiles, as expressed in our reader’s concern above. Unfortunately, Samsung has given the S3 two pre-set profiles only: silent and driving mode.

1st Solution: Our reader’s concern is easier to address because he wants to silence all audio notifications except the call ringer so he couldn’t miss a call. In Galaxy S3, owners need to go to Settings => Sound and check Silent Mode option while setting the incoming call volume to their desired level. It means that all audio including media and alarm are set to off except the incoming call ringer.

2nd Solution: While we provided a manual way to solve this concern, we highly recommend the use of a third-party app. In this case, we suggest the use of Profile Scheduler, which is available in the Play Store for free.

Note: We are not, in anyway, affiliated with the company or group of people who developed the Profile Scheduler app. It’s just that it comes highly recommended because it is easy to use and straightforward.

Galaxy S3 Battery/Charger Issues

Reader’s Question: My Galaxy S3 charger has been damaged/burnt from the inside so I bought another one (it’s original) but the same thing happened. When I plugged my phone it showed 80% battery (I know it’s charging because the battery icon has lightning symbol in it), then 10 minutes later it is still showing 80% and still charging. What could have caused this?

Answer: I also experienced having three of my chargers got busted before and every single time I would crack those damaged chargers open to see what the problem was. The first two cases were the same as I recovered burnt diode and resistor from each charger. The third one was a bit severe because there were already 2 burnt diodes and 3 resistors plus a capacitor that was about to break open. The ending was I bought a new charger and battery and the problem never occurred again.

That’s what I can advise you with your problem. But a new, original charger and a new battery. I’m guessing here but there is a great possibility the problem is with the battery. If not, then at least you now have a spare battery.  Unless you’ll bring your phone to a tech, we will never know what causes this problem. All we can do is guess.

Galaxy S3 Cannot Complete OTA Update

Reader’s Question: My S3 won’t update to 4.1. Every time I try to, it starts but stops as soon as it reaches 26%. I’ve done this more than a dozen times. What’s wrong?

Answer: There are lots of things that affect the behavior of your Galaxy S3; it could be from the outside or inside of your phone. It could be the internet connection or the current condition of your device. If you’ve attempted several times to update your device over the air to no avail, may be it’s time you make use of Samsung KIES. With this tool, there is a great better percentage you can complete the update. However, if you are a geek yourself, you might want to consider manually updating your phone.

Galaxy S3 Mobile Data Drains Battery Faster

Reader’s Question: My problem is when mobile data is active on my Galaxy S3. The battery drains faster than turning off mobile data. Syncing is off. Only default Whatsapp and Facebook apps are active. Is there any solution to this problem? Thanks in advance.

Answer: I’m not being sarcastic but naturally when you turn your mobile data on, the battery can drain faster than when it is off. Mobile data, especially when you are using 4G LTE, eats up battery faster than Wi-Fi. It is because, inside the phone, there are several components being used just to be able send/receive data (and pass network authentication) from the tower, not to mention the phone and the battery accumulate more heat; it discharges battery even faster.

We have published an awesome article on how to extend the battery life of Samsung Galaxy S3.

For the guy to whom you recommended to use “profiles”, He can modify the SGS3′s built in blocking mode settings to match his needs, I set it to block everything except calls while I am at work so I do not get bothered by email and text notifications.

I went from the iphone to the galaxy 3 at the end of November. I noticed that when I charge the galaxy 3 it gets very hot. I was worried it may catch on fire or damage my phone so I actually called Samsung to see if anyone else was having the same problem. After waiting 45 minutes the man I spoke with said no. After my insistence he said I could send them the phone and they would investigate and call me in a week or so with the findings. After explaining I do not have a back up phone he told me surly I had a friend that had a extra phone. Last week I charged the phone on my night stand while I slept and when I woke up their next morning it has what appears to be a crack near where the charger is plugged in. I am so upset because I tried to do the correct thing by calling Samsung. Now I have voided my Verizon warranty because they will say its cracked. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you handle the problem. I feel like I’m stuck unless I use my insurance and pay a deductible.

  • Jeff

When you use blocking mode, does it really block the texts and emails in general or does it just silence the notifications?

  • Elenore

I experienced the same thing too.I noticed that if I charged my S3 when battery level is below 30% it gets hot while more than 30% it goes well and charges so quickly.

  • Soky

Go into SETTINGS -> SOUND -> VOLUME -> and there you can choose to turn off all the sounds except the ringone. That way you won’t have to hear all the alerts for everything and only hear your phone ring. That will fix that issue of wanting to turn off all the notifications but still have the ringer on.

Hi, When I updated to version 4.1.1 my charging time went from 1 hour to overnight or 8 hours with the unit only having 30% charge I was using a original charger then which was part of the package. I saw an old charger from my old Nokia Unit and used it on my Samsung S3 it charged normally.

Can anyone tell me how to resolve this and what seems to be the issue here? I know that the original charger is okay and the issue is the update it affected the way the unit charges. Also I have been able to update with the latest version but problem still persist. Thanks

Phone says battery disconnected after updating to jellybean 4.1.2 – meaning phone will not charge – however I can connect it to kies via usb, and it will sync. But no charge either way… using an external charger at the moment for the battery. I was thinking if I waited for the new update it may work as the charging port isn’t damaged.

I have been having the very same issue for over 6 months now. I charge my S3 and the battery indicator shows 100% fully charged but when I remove the charger (about 30-50 seconds afterwards) the battery indicator drops to 40-30%. I have become very familiar with not only AT&T Tech support but also Samsung tech support with no resolution or fix. I have had to preform a unnecessary back up and restore 3 times all to get NO resolution or change in behavior. I have noticed that if I charge my device with a PC USB port or my TV’s USB port that I can get it fully charged & the battery indicator does not decrease after 30-40 seconds. My phone will NOT charge with the charger plugged into the wall. It will show that its charging but you will actually notice that even though it reads it is charging my battery life will actually decrease while plugged in.
I have become very frustrated and even more so very disappointed that after 6 months my issue still persists. Warranty replaced my battery twice my charger once and NO change in behavior. Now I have been told that the issue lies within the charging PORT and it needs replaced. How can this be when my device is only 10 months old? I think the resolution should be rectified thorough Samsung and I should not have to suffer and go without a device while Samsung repairs it (7-14 days) or have to pay means it’s not something that I did or could prevent. It’s manufactured with this MAJOR defect & it’s not only mine it’s ALL of them. This is a MAJOR defect in this device. I have noticed that I’m not the only one experiencing this issue, it seems that ALOT of people are experiencing the very same issue. I hope that this major FLAW or Defect does not carry over to the S4 or I sadly may have to go back to the IPhone. I love this device but if I can’t get this battery charging issue resolved, love for the device will be outweighed by praticality and the reality that anything that does not char ge is NOT worth buying or keeping.

If anyone finds a resolution other than having to have the port repaired please DO SHARE!!!
