Samsung is great at making Android devices, and they stand at top of the list when it comes to sales of Android by volumes. Samsung also makes devices using other software platforms such as their own proprietary Bada OS and Windows Phone. They have made few good Windows Phone in the past, but for some reason they aren’t showing much interest in Windows Phone 8.
It should be noted that Samsung was the first manufacturer to announce a Windows Phone 8 device, and now Verizon Wireless has finally announced that they will be making the much awaited Samsung ATIV Odyssey available to its customers on 24 January. The device was previously anticipated to be shipped in December last year, but that didn’t happen due to some problems which the manufacturer faced. As far as the device goes, it’s a mid range device, so don’t expect anything special in here. ATIV Odyssey includes a 4-inch Super AMOLED display at 800 × 480 resolution, 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 8GB of internal storage, 5-megapixel rear-camera, 1.2 megapixel front camera, and LTE. Verizon currently has only two Windows Phone 8 devices, so the third one is definitely a welcome move, but people who have been waiting for this device to launch may have already moved on and bought something else. It should be noted that this is one of the few Windows Phone 8 devices that support memory expansion via microSD cards, so if you value that, this could be a great WP8 device. Other attraction should be the price tag itself, which is $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a new two-year contract.
The device is also available in UK via Phones 4U, but the device there comes with a slight difference in specs. It’s a bit light and large, and also offers a bigger battery pack. For those who are looking for a budget Windows Phone 8 handset on Verizon, they can either choose the ATIV Odyssey or Lumia 822, and both come at $50. Besides, the specs of Samsung’s offering isn’t all that bad for a $50 device, so to speak.
Since Valentine’s day is also fast approaching, Verizon will also be taking part in Valentine’s Day festivities by offering two new versions of existing smartphones. As previously rumored and also spotted at CES, the Nokia Lumia 822 will be made available in red and the Motorola DROID RAZR M will be sold in pink. Both the device are currently available in black and white, and the Lumia 822 can be bought in gray color as well. Verizon hasn’t said anything about pricing information for these two new colors, but the website lists $49.99 for the Lumia 822 and $99.99 for the DROID RAZR M.
We will be seeing a lot of offers on smartphones, thanks to Valentine’s day. Windows Phone 8 devices always have some offers on them. AT&T is offering buy one get one free on Lumia 920 device. Are you planning to buy Samsung ATIV Odyssey? Let us know in the comment section below.
