When Microsoft announced Windows Phone 8 it also stated that Windows Phone 7 based devices won’t be upgraded to the next big thing, the Windows Phone 8 operating system. That of course had a major hit on sales of Windows Phone 7 based Nokia Lumia handsets. Now that Windows Phone 8 has launched, and that too at a very reasonable price on contract, all are venturing into buying one of those, but what about people who bought Windows Phone 7 based devices recently?
Well, Microsoft later confirmed that they will be rolling out Windows Phone 7.8 for those older devices and this update will back port some features from Windows Phone 8. Something is better than nothing, and seems like Microsoft has completed the development of update and will start rolling it out to older devices very soon.
According to folks at PocketGamer.biz, Nokia has told them:
…the roll out of 7.8 to existing devices remains in Microsoft’s hands, though the firm’s Windows Phone 7 currently shipping to retail – such as the Lumia 800 – have the update pre-loaded.
Apparently the update is ready and Nokia is also ready to distribute Windows Phone 7.8 to all the older devices, but they need a green signal from Microsoft, and the software giant hasn’t signaled yet. It should be noted that Nokia has been shipping new Nokia Lumia 800 model with Windows Phone 7.8 software for some time now, and this is what Nokia had to say on the matter:
“With Windows Phone 7.8 beginning to ship pre-loaded on Nokia Lumia smartphones, we will naturally be deploying the software to our factories for product rollout. At present we have no more information we can give about wider availability of the update for phones running Windows Phone 7.5.”-Nokia
According to Microsoft, older devices running Windows Phone 7.5 cannot run Windows Phone 8 due to hardware limitations. Windows Phone 7.8 is designed to give those with the limited hardware capabilities the opportunity to get a taste of Windows Phone 8. Recently, developers managed to port Windows Phone 8 to HTC HD2, which is a pretty old device and is a Windows Mobile 6 device for that matter, so owners of older WP 7 devices may be able to install WP 8 unofficially at a later point in time.
