Nexus 7 beats iPad mini in Japan3
Google and ASUS’ Nexus 7 is a great device and comes with a really reasonable price tag. It has got quality and direct support from Google. Apple’s recent launch, the iPad mini is also a good device and falls directly under the category to which Nexus 7 belongs to. Apple iPad mini has price advantage over the full sized iPad, plus it is also more portable. Besides, it’s an Apple product, which means people believe it to be the highest quality product in the market.
Anyways, iPad mini is selling in good numbers in China, which happens to be one of the largest market in the world. Coming to Japan, it is a high tech country and electronic devices are obviously popular over there, but then there are several Japanese products which have an upper hand over products such as iPad or Nexus 7, but Apple is very popular over there. Like everywhere else in the world, Nexus 7 has an upper hand over iPad mini in the price tag department, and apparently Nexus 7 has overtaken the iPad mini as the best-selling tablet in Japan over the Holiday season. The sale figures are very close, but Nexus 7 beats iPad mini by few % points.
Nikkei cites market research firm BCN which conducted a market research survey in over 2,400 stores across Japan and the results were not very surprising. Google’s 7-inch tablet accounted for 44.4% of all tablet sales. The sales of iPad mini accounted for 40.1% of all tablet sales over the period.
The lower price of the Nexus was a major selling point for year-end shoppers. In unit terms, iPad sales also increased, but Apple was hurt by a dearth of iPad minis during the holiday sales season — along with the fact that ardent Apple fans were quick to buy the new iPad when it was released in November. -BGR
The reason is obviously the price. Nexus 7 costs 19,800 yen ($221) whereas the iPad mini range starts at 28,888 yen ($322), which is significantly higher. It should be noted that Japan is a tiny country, though population density is pretty high. The overall sales of tablets last year were mere 3.6 million units. The entry-level price of full sized iPad starts at 42,800 yen.
