LG Electronics like Samsung is known for a wide range of electronics components, ranging from home appliances to smartphones. The South Korean manufacturer is also very popular for the display panels that it produces with Apple being one of its key clients (for iPhones and iPads). After Samsung announced its new display panels at CES yesterday, it was only a matter of time we thought until LG announced its lineup of display panels for various sections of the industry.

LG took full advantage of the CES event by showing off three new display panels as previously rumored last week. The first display being showcased was the 5.5-inch 1080p panel with a pixel density of 400ppi. We can almost sense manufacturers getting geared up for a phablet with this belter of a display panel. Perhaps, LG has its own phablet plans with this panel which might not be a bad idea really. Next up is the 7-inch 1920×1200 display panel which could well make its way into high end 7-inch tablets. We say high end because almost every 7-inch tablet in the market today comes under the budget segment, so it’s probably high time we saw a premium 7-inch tablet being launched and this display would fit in perfectly with that. This panel will clearly eat out all the current competition with ease, so manufacturers will be looking forward to getting their hands dirty on this one. And the last of the display panels showed off was the 12.9-inch 2560×1700 panel which can quite possibly make its way to either an ultra sized tablet or a very portable netbook/ultrabook. The resolution immediately puts it in the Retina” category, as Apple’s 15-inch Macbook Pro with Retina Display boasts of similar resolution (2880×1800).

We certainly loved what LG had to show at CES 2013, and it is hoped that we get to see these panels in action soon. It is claimed that these panels will be seen on at least one device in 2013, so that’s very positive. I’m guessing LG has plans for mass production of these displays, especially the 5.5-inch and 7-inch panels, as they could certainly be one of the highest selling panels of 2013. If you recall, the Lenovo K900 which launched at CES 2013 also sports a 5.5-inch 1080p display panel. There is still no confirmation if this panel is supplied by LG or if it’s merely a coincidence. High def displays are certainly the way to go in 2013. The 5-inch 1080p panels which are made by Sharp are currently facing supply issues, so we could see manufacturers seek LG’s assistance in that scenario.
