How to install Sprint Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean 4.2.1 GA02 OTA update

Posted on Jan 17 2013 - 8:31pm by Harold Hisona

The variant of Galaxy Nexus carried by Sprint will soon receive an Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean update but before the roll out takes place Google made the official firmware available for download to people who might just want to install it manually. An XDA dev said in a post that the leaked firmware would end up to be the final OTA (over-the-air) update in the following days.

Step-by-step Installation Guide

There is a way to flash this new firmware for the Galaxy Nexus, although, it requires a little flashing knowledge.

Some reminders:

  • Prior to applying the new update, owners are advised to make a backup of data in their device to make sure they remain intact just in case bad things happen unexpectedly during the process.
  • There’s no need to root Google Nexus or install custom recovery tools.
  • Make sure you have the more recent version of adb before you will use sideload command in this guide. Otherwise, you can download it from here.

Step 1: Download Android 4.2.1 GA02 firmware from Google’s server or from the mirror link provided at the end of this step. Make sure you download it in a directory you can easily find or access. Links: from Google | Mirror (courtesy of Android Police).

Step 2: Reboot your Galaxy Nexus while holding on to VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons. After a short while, you should be seeing the fastboot menu. Navigate to “Recovery” using the Volume keys and press POWER button to choose. In recovery mode, you can see an Android with an exclamation point, press VOLUME UP and POWER buttons simultaneously to enter a new menu where you can find and choose the option “apply update from adb.”

Step 3: You may connect your Nexus to your computer now and launch command prompt in the same folder you downloaded GA02 firmware a while ago. If you’re using Windows, browse through the directory, press SHIFT key while doing a right-click on the mouse, and choose “Open command window here” option.

Step 4: Now, type the following command: adb sideload c5ea6e959840.update_mysidspr_FH05_to_GA02.zip

Step 5: Wait until the progress bar reaches 100% before you disconnect and reboot your Galaxy Nexus.

Your device should now be running Android 4.2.1. Not only do you have the most recent version, you are also among the first few to enjoy it. For those who find this guide a bit complicated, you better wait for the official roll out that would be done by Sprint soon.
