Several months after the announcement, Samsung finally launched the long awaited Samsung ATIV Odyssey few days back. It was the first Windows Phone 8 device to be announced, but for some reason the launch got delayed and now you can buy it on Verizon. It’s a mid-range device, so don’t expect anything high end in the specs too, but the main attraction is the price tag itself, which is $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a new two-year contract.
You can always find better deals online. In the case of Lumia 920, AT&T brought it in for $100 on a 2 year contract, but you can always find great deals on the phone elsewhere, and most probably you will even find it for free on contract. Similar to Lumia 920 and other phones, there are deals available on Verizon Samsung ATIV Odyssey elsewhere. It has been just few since the device has gone on sale in stores and online, and the internet already has great deals which will tempt you to buy this Windows Phone 8 powered device.
Best Buy Mobile Solutions is offering the ATIV Odyssey for free with a two-year contract. What makes this deal even better is that the discount applies to new contracts, upgrades, or adding a new line to an existing plan. Apart from that, you can opt to pick up your newly bought device at any local Best Buy store, which is another nice attraction to the deal.
As far as the device goes, it’s a mid range device, so expecting something extra ordinary wouldn’t be fair. ATIV Odyssey includes a 4-inch Super AMOLED display at 800 × 480 resolution, 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 8GB of internal storage, 5-megapixel rear-camera, 1.2 megapixel front camera, and LTE. Verizon currently has only two Windows Phone 8 devices, so this third addition should provide users with options if they want to go Windows Phone 8 way. It should be noted that this is one of the few Windows Phone 8 devices that support memory expansion via microSD cards, so if you value that, this could be a great WP8 device.
The deal is great, and the specs are just great for a device you can buy for free. Verizon doesn’t really have options for Windows Phone 8 fans. It has got the HTC 8X for high end device, and there’s no Lumia 920 since it’s an exclusive model for AT&T. Apart from that, the carrier has Nokia Lumia 822, which is an exclusive version of Lumia 820 that Nokia built for Verizon, and like the 820, it’s a mid range device. ATIV Odyssey is a good option, and of course it needs an incentive if it wants to go against the high end HTC 8X and mid range Lumia 820, and perhaps offering it for free will fetch it the attention it deserves, plus it entered very late into the competition, which is already intense.
