A new report from Digitimes suggests that Apple could be preparing to release a more budget-friendly iPhone. The device is purportedly aimed at emerging markets, and could hit the market around the second half of the year.

The affordable device is expected to pack a display with a larger measurement than the current iPhone. Allegedly, this will help Apple compete with the companies releasing high-end mobile devices with larger displays that measure around five inches diagonally. Furthermore, the iPhone could sport a “brand new exterior design.” Details, however, about said design revamp have not been indicated.

Meanwhile, the lower price of the handset could have been brought about by the success of the iPad mini, Apple’s downsized and more pocket-friendly tablet, in emerging markets like China.

Apple could take advantage of Qualcomm’s new chipsets such as the dual-core MSM8960 and the quad-core APQ8064, which are aimed at smartphones for the entry-level or mid-range market segments, in producing the more reasonably-priced iPhone.

Digitimes cites unnamed supply chain sources as the basis for the report.

Digitimes has also gotten word that Apple may be teaming up with China Mobile for the release of a TD-version of the handset.

In a related report, The Wall Street Journal confirmed the rumor for the low-cost handset. The design is said to be similar to the older iPhone models, with some changes in the external look. Supposedly, Apple will bring the price of the device down by using a polycarbonate plastic shell. The other parts, however, would be the same as the ones used on the other iPhone models, or taken from older models of the handset.

Apple has not made any comments regarding the rumor, according to the newspaper.

It would be recalled that since the first iPhone was released in 2007, the Cupertino company only made available one model at a time, with various capacities for its internal storage.
