Apple’s latest iPad mini is doing extremely well, especially in China. Apple periodically refreshes its devices by launching iterations of successful models, and that’s how you keep the product line fresh and people will have a reason to upgrade. In case of Apple’s iPad lineup, it’s apparently now on a twice-a-year refresh cycle.
According to the latest rumor, the new updated versions of regular iPad and iPad mini will be launched in March. The rumor comes from Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets. According to him, his checks with industry sources at this week’s CES event in Las Vegas, Nev., indicated both the fifth-generation iPad and second-generation iPad mini will debut this March.
The news definitely managed to surprise me because the latest update was announced five months, so the company is pretty quick. If you are wondering what kind of updates these devices will receive, White was told that iPad 5 will be substantially lighter when compared to the fourth generation iPad. Apart from that, the device will also shave some value in the thickness department. The updated model will also feature Apple’s latest A6X processor and Apple’s smaller Lightning chip. The overall design will be in sync with the signature iPad styling, so no much changes over there.
As far as iPad mini goes, the device will retain overall design features, but will likely have a faster processor and some upgraded components that will affect its performance. Also, iPad mini may get the company’s high resolution retina display on this highly popular variant of iPad. Retina displays are present on almost all the devices from Apple where displays play a major role in the user experience. We also have the new Macbook Pro with retina display, so there should be no reason as to why iPad mini shouldn’t receive the same treatment.
White hasn’t disclosed his source for obvious reasons. It should be noted that Apple doesn’t attend CES, nor do they have a stall at this major event, however, several industry insiders attend the event and maybe that’s how he got all this information.
Last week, White had informed that Apple will be launching its next iPhone, the iPhone 5S in multiple colors and sizes. The next iPhone is expected to be available in eight colors, including the pink, yellow, blue, green, purple, silver and slate shades that are currently found on iPod nano. Apart from that, there will also be a red color which benefits AIDS research financially.
“We believe this is about to change with the next iPhone offering different screen sizes that we believe will allow Apple to better bifurcate the market and expand its reach,” White said. “This eventually opens up the possibility for a lower-priced iPhone (i.e., iPhone mini) with a smaller screen size that could allow Apple to further penetrate markets such as China and open up opportunities in India.”
