Piracy of digital content is a large scale affair, and most people on the internet succumb to piracy with the temptation of not having to pay a penny to any sort of content at any given time of the day. TV Shows is also one of the most pirated things on the internet, as you would expect. People living outside the U.S cannot really access TV shows which are exclusive to the country, and the lack of legal downloadable content is what eventually drags people to the abyss of piracy. It is now being reported that among TV Shows, Game of Thrones (HBO) was the most pirated in 2012. The previous year, popular TV show Dexter held this spot which has now come down to the #2 place thanks to the immense popularity of GoT. A single episode of Game of Thrones was downloaded 4,280,000 times. That should tell you about the popularity of the show. It is immediately apparent that the show is more popular outside the U.S as the estimated viewership of the TV Show in the U.S is only 4,200,000.

It is believed that over 80% of the people downloading the app come from outside the U.S. Australia seems to have taken a particular liking to the show since the show is aired a week later than the actual telecast in the U.S, which explains the eagerness to get it. BitTorrent downloads are increasing with each passing day despite efforts by producers, companies to curb piracy. A reason for the popularity of Game of Thrones with pirates could have something to do with HBO’s limited access viewership for global audiences. Shows like the Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother are third and fourth respectively, which sees massive amounts of downloads even in the U.S.

Piracy is never a great idea as it is in stark contrast to the policies put in place by the government. Even though people know all the legal ramifications, they go ahead with the process. Perhaps if network operators/channels went a little easy on its viewers and offered a chance to view content online, most of this can be ended. I’m sure most people wouldn’t mind paying as long as they have instant access to the said TV Show/Movie. Commonly, the urge to download a newly released movile is more as it saves the time to walk into an actual theater and pay for the ticket. So no matter what the government does, people will always find a way through to get it pirated.
