The team behind Viber, the app that lets users call or send messages for free through a Wi-Fi or 3G connection, has announced that it has reached 140 million users from 193 countries. Last July, it reported that it had 90 million users, while in September, the number rose to 100 million. The company estimates getting around 400,000 new users every single day. Thus, by the time the holidays are over, it is expected to top 150 million users.
Viber has released a special fun version 2.3 of the app to celebrate this achievement. This new version, which is available for those on Android and iOS, allows users to add stickers and emoticons to their messages. There is also a “Send Location” feature gives one’s location on a map. Viber also enhanced the user interface. In the Android app, there is an option to use the smartphone’s ringtone and message tone as alerts for Viber.
The app also boasts of having HD sound quality, ease of use, and an always-on feature. Furthermore, it is free to download and also does not have any ads. On Google Play, it has a rating of 4.4 out of 5 and is compatible for Android devices with at least Android 2.0. In the last month, it has gotten between 50,000,000 to 100,000,000 installs.
To date, Viber is offering its services in several operating systems, including Android, iOS, Windows Phone 7, Blackberry, Nokia S40, Symbian, and Bada. The last three ones, however, still do not have Viber’s voice call feature. Among its competitors are Skype, eBuddy, KIK, and Tango. Its fiercest opponent, however, would have to be Whatsapp by Whatsapp Inc.,which is currently the most popular OTT messaging service. Whatsapp, for its part, has an estimated 200 to 300 million users.
