Top 5 Android Smartphones for Under $99 December 2012

Posted on Dec 3 2012 - 8:24pm by Rodge

The holiday season is here with us, and it is that time of giving again.  With smartphones being the hottest selling gadgets (besides tablets and mini-tablets), if you want to get someone a present they will remember you by for at least a year, I would recommend an entry level smartphone.  This is particularly perfect for individuals who may still own their old-school non-smartphone phone.  When getting someone a smartphone, it is imperative that you do not put too much load on them in terms of monthly payments they will pay to the cellular company.  There are some amazing deals you can get today for less than $99, and here are some of the most recommended.

1.      Motorola DROID RAZR M

The Motorola DROID RAZR M has earned the number 3 bestselling smartphone on Amazon largely because of its price and the high end features.  On Verizon, this high end 4G LTE smartphone comes at a price of $99 with a 2 year contract which to me makes it perfect for someone who wants a high performance phone for the price of a budget phone.  The most attractive feature of the RAZR M is not its dazzling shape, it is the 2,000 mAh battery which promises up to 408 hours of standby time and u to 20 hours talk time.  If you have a close relation who needs such a high performance phone to start the new 2013 in style, this is the perfect gadget to get them.

2.      HTC One X

Released way back in May this year, the HTC One X was at the time of its introduction one of the finest smartphones you could lay your hands on.  There have of course been advancements in the industry over the past half year, including the introduction of the improved version of One X, the One X+ and a ton of other high performance phones.  This however remains a lowly priced phone worth the price tag.  Not only does it come packed with a ton of great software, it also comes with Beats Audio earphones and player and uses the ImageSense technology.  The biggest downside of this phone is its limited 32GB storage (26GB available to the user) but 32 GB is a lot for an average user.  Its design and size makes the One X an intuitive and classy phone for a first time smartphone owner.

3.      LG Optimus L9

Get your loved one the Optimus L9 and they can take advantage of the blazing fast 4G speeds with this 5 incher phone at an amazingly low price of $79.99.  This phone has been around for only a month or so but the name Optimus has been around for a while.  The name Optimus is synonymous with power and reliability and this is what the L9 offers.  Do not let the price fool you, this may be the best deal you can get for a 4G capable 5 incher in the market today.  Know someone who could use the 5 incher for business or entertainment?  Surprise them with this and make a difference in the holiday spirits.  This however may not be a great choice for someone who values multimedia or taking pictures and videos because it has very limited internal storage memory but this downside seems to be partially compensated by a high performance battery.

4.      HTC EVO 4G LTE

The HTC EVO 4G LTE smartphone is not a GSM device, do not get someone this phone if you are unsure if they can use it on CDMA.  Its design and build resembles others on HTC’s line up including the One X but it has been optimized for a different network band – and has a microSD card slot too!  It of course comes with the standard benefits of an HTC device including Beats Audio and a ton of beneficial software and utilities.  It’s crisp 4.7 inch display, amazing camera and 16 GB internal storage are a reason enough to choose it over most other under-$100 Android smartphones.  Furthermore, Jelly Bean upgrades of the operating system are already rolling out for the EVO 4G.

5.      Motorola Electrify 2

What is fascinating about the Motorola Electrify 2 is its design – with classy angled corners and a protruding top at the rear.  This is a pretty thin phone, the US Cellular version of Motorola Droid Razr M boasting of an edge-to-edge screen and GSM and CDMA support.  If looking for a classy durable and high performance phone, the Electrify 2 is a perfect candidate given its specs in comparison with the price.  It is the right phone for office and personal use given the 8 GB internal memory, the 8 megapixels rear camera and high speed 3G data transfer capability.  The major downsides of the Electrify 2 though are its unimpressive display quality and lack of 4G.  It was announced in July and made available the same month.

Carrier: US Cellular

Price: $99.99

Contract: 2 Years

Specs Overview

Processor: Dual-core 1.2 GHz TI OMAP 4430 processor with PowerVR SGX540 GPU
