Samsung New Device Rumors; Project J, New Galaxy Note, 13.3 Tablet

A new rumor, which I think is worth mentioning, surfaced today regarding new upcoming Samsung devices.  Before I dig into it though, I must mention that although we see man rumors every week, they all remain what they are – rumors – until we get sufficient proof of truth.  In regards to this new development, Samsung is said to be working on several devices – a new device codenamed ‘Project J’ which could be anything from a Samsung Galaxy high end device to cameras or projectors, a new basic version of the Galaxy Note II tablet, a new 7 inch galaxy note tablet and a new larger 13.3 inch tablet.

Project J

There is no much information regarding project J but rumor has it that this could be a new Samsung Galaxy S device in development to be announced sometime in April 2013.  When an S device is mentioned, it is most likely to be the Samsung Galaxy SIV – the successor of the SIII as the flagship device of Samsung.  What we hear is that the new device will come with a full HD AMOLED display, a quad-core processor, Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, a 5.0 inch screen and a 13 megapixels rear camera.  The source of these rumors however could not confirm whether these specifications are right, especially considering that Samsung seemed to have made a lot of progress lately regarding developing processors with more than 4 cores.  A few weeks ago, we heard that Samsung had managed to create a 128GB memory chip and flexible displays supposedly to be installed on the next Galaxy S device – could this be the SIV?

Basic Galaxy Note II

The Galaxy Note II phablet has been a tremendous success in the market – that is in comparison with products in the same category.  However, one of the biggest downsides of the phone cum mini tablet is that it is very expensive largely because of the high end specifications including a quad core 1.6 GHz processor, 2GB RAM, super AMOLED screen and an 8 megapixels camera.  To drive the price down, Samsung may be working on a basic version of the Note II which may feature lesser specs such as 1 GB RAM, non-super AMOLED screen and 8 or 16 GB memory options.  The basic version of Note II may however come with the same quad-core processor and the 5 inch screen, but this time plain AMOLED and without the SPEN function.

7 Inch tablet

The rumor of a 7 inch Samsung Galaxy tablet is backed with proof of NenaMark2 benchmark results.  The tablet model number GT-N5100 back up rumors that had surfaced earlier that Samsung was working on a new Galaxy Note tablet – but larger than the Note II.  The benchmark results show that the tablet comes with a 1.6 GHz quad-core processor (the same one on Note II) with Mali 400 GPU, a 1280×720 pixels display and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Operating system.  Since benchmark tests of this device are already being carried out, it is expected to come to the market sometime around February 2013.

13.3 inch tablet

Samsung wants to challenge the dominance of Asus’s 13” Transformer tablet with a Galaxy tablet of the same size.  The tablet, which is said to come with a full QWERTY keyboard dock that effectively transforms it to a laptop, may come with a new Exynos 5440 quad-core processor the company is said to be getting ready to mass manufacture.  There are no much details known about this new tablet – not even the operating system or anything different that may make it better than the transformer but I know that if it is real, it is just a matter of time before more details surface.
