In what is appearing to become a holiday tradition for the company, Google has announced through their blog that they will be extending the free Gmail voice call service through 2013. This service allows anyone in the U.S, or Canada to make free domestic calls.  This will be the third straight year of extension for the service which started in 2010.

Gmail Voice Call Free

We’re hoping that the company can make this a permanent service since it is quite useful. Instead of going to your landline to make a call you can just stay in front of your computer and make free calls anywhere within the U.S. and Canada. Now that’s really very convenient.

What is Gmail Voice Call?

This is a service launched by Google in 2010 which allows anyone with a Gmail account to make VoIP calls. Subscribers will be able to make free domestic calls to any landline or mobile number in the U.S. or Canada. You will also be able to make International calls however you must top up your account first. The rates are very competitive with prices starting at just two cents a minute for international calls. You won’t need a phone for this service since you can make a call using your Gmail email account. What you do need however is a good Internet connection and a microphone present in your computer.

Other Google Development

Aside from this good news Google also announced two important features for Chrome version 25. The company has now made it impossible for extensions to silently install themselves in the Chrome browser. While some people have installed extensions coming from the Chrome store some users have reported that they have extensions they didn’t even know about. As of version 25 extensions that are installed by third party programs using external extension deployment options are going to be disabled by default. Aside from this, all extensions that are previously installed using external extension deployment options will be disabled.
