This Friday Facebook released a standalone app available for the iPhone called the Poke app. This app allows you to send text messages, photos, and videos to your friends. What makes this messaging app different is that anything you send out will have an expiration time which you can set. You can set a one second to ten second self-destruct timer for your messages making them available to the recipient only temporarily.
The company says Poke “makes it fun and easy to say hello to friends wherever you are.” The popular social network has also a Poke functionality on the web and just improved it this time around for mobile devices.
This expiring message feature is similar to Snapchat which is quite popular among the young generation. Snapchat allows people to send out messages that when read by the recipient instantly disappears. Facebook on the other hand does not want to concentrate on the teen demographic instead wants to target everyone using their services.
The company said “With the Poke app, you can poke or send a message, photo or video to Facebook friends to share what you’re up to in a lightweight way. You can poke an individual friend or several at once. Each message expires after a specific time you’ve set, either one, three, five or 10 seconds. When time runs out, the message disappears from the app.”
You can now download Facebook poke over at the App Store. It has an 8.6 MB file size and is available in several languages such as English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. Make sure your device is running at least iOS 5. 1. Although this app is optimized for the iPhone 5 you can still get it for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad.
