Sony is known for its innovative and unique smartphones, ever since the company was known as Sony Ericsson. Even after the company parted ways with Ericsson, innovation hasn’t stopped. The Xperia S and ion marked a new revival in Sony’s mobile business and although they weren’t quite the hot sellers Sony was expecting, it did win over a lot of fans. Sadly though, we haven’t seen a premium Sony smartphone in the market which could directly take on stalwarts like the iPhone, the HTC One X or the Samsung Galaxy S III. Sony seems to be paying more emphasis towards design than actual hardware, which is partially responsible for its condition right now in the market. But according to a statement by the Corporate Vice President of Sony, Dennis Van Schie, Sony could well be prepping a new flagship which would directly take on smartphones like the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III. “We will create in the near future a flagship model that can compete with Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S III,” were his exact words.
All indications point towards the meaty Sony Yuga that we’ve heard so much about. The phone apparently sports a 5-inch 1080p display, which means we’ll see a whole new segment kick off in the mobile industry. 4-7 or 4.8 inches have been the standard for flagships so far, but ever since HTC upped the ante with its 5-inch Droid DNA and J Butterfly in Japan, we could feel a new trend being set. We should soon see Samsung and other manufacturers join the party too. Bear in mind we’re not taking the Galaxy Note series into consideration as it is in a league of its own. Sony’s CVP seems pretty optimistic about the company’s chances in the Windows Phone department but also said that it doesn’t have immediate plans to step into the scene.
“We will bring in addition to the existing Xperia Tablet other Android tablets to the market, but not many,” said Van Schie about the company’s plans for the tablet industry. After the not so successful Xperia Tablet S and Tablet P, it is evident that Sony wants to take things slow. As of now though, the company would want to shift all focus on the said flagship. Perhaps Sony will launch the said device at CES in 2013 like the company did early this year with the Xperia S and ion. It is hoped however that Sony launches a device in time for the holiday season so as to give some competition to the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S III.
