This the year of the Ouya. Alright, that’s not a definite, but is highly possible.
Consoles are great. I love the PlayStation 3 because of the exclusive titles it has, likewise with the Xbox 360. I’ll definitely be getting the next one when the next-gen consoles come out, but maybe you aren’t entirely on board with that idea. Maybe you are really liking the games that are being offered on the Android platform this year. Maybe you are wanting to stick with the Android platform to see all of the games evolve. I have good news for you, you may just want to wait on the Ouya and not get a new console this year. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are amazing, but we really haven’t seen an open source type of console yet. The Ouya is going to bring an entire new experience, and could possibly even change how we look at consoles today due to it being open source.
There are a variety of companies jumping on board the Ouya, because they know it is going to do well not only due to the popularity the Android platform has currently, but also due to the way that the new console is being designed. One of the most powerful processors in the history of Android hardware is NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chip, which happens to be powering the Ouya. With that said, the Ouya is going to have a lot of capabilities that our everyday phones do not. The Tegra 3 is by no means a widespread chip, at least yet. The Ouya is going to be powerful, and since a lot of games are beginning to use the Unreal Development Kit or more commonly referred to as the “Unreal Engine,” we can expect to start seeing some great games that are on par to what the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 can offer, it’s possible that we can expect them to be even better. Since the Ouya is open source, the console can only evolve with a lot of the next-gen technology as well.
With that said, the next-gen console may already be close. We know it as the “Ouya,” but a lot of people underestimate the true power that Android has. Games are starting to get a lot of depth and story added to them on the Android platform, which makes the Ouya a perfect target for games. Developers are going to want to develop for it simply because it offers something more advanced, and gives developers a lot more to work with than just your standard 4′ phone screen.
I’ll still personally be getting the next PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, but the Ouya really does have high chances against them. It may even get the advantage of releasing before Microsoft and Sony are able to produce their next-gen technology. I could go into how this will drastically support Indie Games, but that’s a topic for another time.
Any thoughts? Do you think the Ouya is good enough that you don’t need to purchase another PlayStation or Xbox 360? Let us know in the comments below!
