Motorola offers trade up for select devices, owners might get $100 rebate

Google’s newly acquired company, Motorola Mobility, recently announced that it will offer trade up for older devices that may not get a major update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The announcement was posted on Friday, October 19th. While it is clear that it’s just another marketing stunt, owners of dated Motorola devices are given a chance to own a new device with fairly good incentive but that is if they qualify for the promotion.

Anyone who owns the following devices may qualify for the said promotion. Owners can actually do the trade online as the company launched a website to cater their needs.

  • DROID 3
  • DROID X2
  • ATRIX™ 4G
  • ATRIX™ 2
  • ADMIRAL™
  • CLIQ 2™
  • MILESTONE™ 3
  • MILESTONE™ X2
  • ELECTRIFY™
  • PHOTON™ 4G
  • XPRT™
  • TITANIUM™
  • TRIUMPH™

There are currently six new models anyone can choose from:

  • ATRIX™ HD (AT&T)
  • DROID RAZR M (Verizon)
  • DROID RAZR HD (Verizon)
  • DROID RAZR MAXX HD (Verizon)
  • ELECTRIFY™ 2 (US Cellular)
  • PHOTON™ Q (Sprint)

Basically, this offer leaves an impression that Motorola wants to eliminate older models from the market to replace them with the ones that are newer, better in design, and stronger in performance. Also, the list above reveals the devices that definitely wouldn’t be getting an update to Jelly Bean.

Recently, the company shared its plan to roll out updates for many of its devices, especially the ones that went on sale in 2011 up to the present. Unfortunately, 2010 releases will not be getting the same treatment. Thus, this trade up program is a logical move for the company that is still struggling to become profitable again. The $100 rebate would be an attractive bundle to all Motorola users especially those who already have plans to upgrade their phones.

For now, only those who are in the US are qualified for this promo but Motorola might also roll it out to other regions. The rebate will be provided in the form of a Verizon Wireless Gift Card, Motorola Visa Prepaid Card, carrier credit, or other equivalent at Motorola’s sole discretion.
