Windows 8 Features 46 of 50 Heavily Downloaded Apps

Microsoft announced that its Windows Phone 8 is set to feature 46 of the top 50 heavily used apps, giving them a big boost in its mission to rival mobile operating system giants Android and iOS.

During the launch of Windows Phone 8 in San Francisco on Monday, Microsoft’s Windows program manager Joe Belfiore said their newest smartphone will have the most-heavily used applications, which includes Temple Run, Angry Bird, Facebook, Temple Run, Twitter, Words With Friends, and Urban Spoon.

“That’s huge progress for us,” said Belfiore, who added that there are around 120,000 apps in the Windows Phone marketplace, though the numbers fade in comparison to Apple with 700,000 applications and Google with 675,000.

Microsoft has been hooking up with developers of late in an effort to come up with new applications for the latest version of their handset operating system.

Moreover, Windows Phone 8 will also feature a latest version of Skype specially designed for Microsoft’s OS. Microsoft will provide a year of free music with no ads when Pandora becomes available in 2013.

Microsoft is pinning their hope on the success of their smartphone operating system with the aim to make some noise in the Operating System Arena.

However, the biggest hurdles for Microsoft in their attempt to compete with Android and Apple remains to be the lack of apps available for Windows Phone. The company asserted they have been pushing developers to provide more apps and expand the presence in the handset mobile market.

Last month, the company drew the ire of developers when it imposed limitations on the access to its software development kit, stating that only developers of the download-heavy apps would be given access early while other developers will eventually follow following the launch of Windows 8. Microsoft claimed it was trying to keep some features secrets at that time.
