It’s been quite long since Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has been out and several devices from various manufacturers have already received the update. The word has it that Samsung will be rolling out Jelly Bean update for its 2012 Android flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S III, very soon. So what about other phones from Samsung? If you happen to own a fairly new Android phone from Samsung, that’s the question you will find asking yourself.
Around 2 weeks ago, Samsung released a list containing names of 10 smartphones confirming the upgrade plan to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The list contained Samsung Galaxy S III and 9 other smartphones. Below is the complete list of international Samsung smartphones that will be getting the taste of Jelly Bean:
• Samsung Galaxy S II/ Samsung Galaxy S II LTE
• Samsung Galaxy Note
• Samsung Galaxy S Advance
• Samsung Galaxy Chat
• Samsung Galaxy Ace 2
• Samsung Galaxy Beam
• Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus
• Samsung Galaxy Mini 2
• Samsung Galaxy S Duos
Apart from these smartphones, Samsung also announced that four of its tablets including Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Galaxy Note 10.1 that would be receiving the Jelly Bean goodness.
Of course, just because international editions of the phones are receiving Jelly Bean update doesn’t mean U.S. versions are also receiving them because these updates have to go through extra layer of modification and testing which takes place at the carrier. Nevertheless, after revealing plans for international devices, Samsung has now come up with a list of phones that will be receiving Jelly Bean update in the United States. As of now, the list looks very small, but we expect more devices to be added in the list very soon.
It should be noted that Samsung Galaxy Nexus from Sprint and Verizon have already been updated to Jelly Bean as it’s a Nexus phone, which means the update doesn’t go through any carrier modifications and are issued directly by Google. Same is the case with Sprint’s Nexus S 4G. It’s no surprise that Samsung Galaxy S III will be getting the update because it’s a new high end smartphone device, besides being a flagship offering. In the recently released official list, Galaxy S III is listed as “Coming Soon” for Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular. We expected Samsung to give some sort of time frame so that the users know when to expect the update, but the Korean technology titan seems to disagree with that practice and we don’t know how soon is “coming soon”.
The Galaxy S III is one of the most popular phones which Samsung has ever produced. The company managed to sell over 20 million units within the first three months of availability. The phone sports a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, and runs using 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and 2GB of RAM. The sales of the GS III are showing no signs of slowing down.
