Virgin Media UK has just today officially announced a competitor to Sky TV’s mobile offerings with their introduction of Virgin TV Anywhere. This new service will be offering those who are subscribers online access to a TiVo style offering and some good on demand content. It won’t be available for Android right away as an Android application is still in the works (should arrive in early 2013), but the service will initially be launching on the iPad and we’ll be seeing a remote recording later this year.
Customers without the TiVo service will be able to take advantage with some of the offered content, but it’s the subscribers to the TiVo service that will be able to benefit from this the most. As an example, the tablet application will soon be available and will be offering you a complete remote control feature for controlling things when you’re at home, along with being able to watch content on the go (which is kind of the idea on both TiVo and Sky TV).
Some first images of the iPad application have surfaced and look really good. It seems to sort of copy the Virgin Media TiVo box pretty closely, but that’s not a huge issue. There’s not a whole lot to be said about the Android app currently, but a similar version to the iPad app would be nice to see. Hopefully we’ll be seeing some more interface images in the near future.
