Viber Has Announced HD Voice Support For Nokia Lumia Windows Phones Exclusively

Just this morning, Viber, the company that’s created a fairly popular and free VoIP communication software announced the soon-to-be available Viber app for Windows Phone, adding to Viber Messenger. This new version of the application is developed with the assistance of Nokia to supposedly bring this new Viber app up to the full Viber standards. With Nokia helping Viber create this new app, it’s going to now support HD voice calls.

Viber has had a very long road to finally get on Windows Phone, especially since their service essentially required deeper integration with the Operating System, which wasn’t available at all for earlier versions of the software. Currently, with the help of Nokia, this new Viber application has full voice over IP protocol support, allowing users to make and receive entirely free phone calls over their data connection (AT&T, Verizon and etc). In addition to all of that, users will of course be able to continue to use the free messenger element of the application.

Straight from the press release:

“Viber is also releasing a completely new version for Nokia Lumia phones running the Windows Phone 7 platform. Viber now offers Nokia Windows Phone 7 users free HD-quality phone calls and group messaging in addition to free text and photo messages. This version was developed in partnership with Nokia and is currently available exclusively on Nokia Lumia phones.”

Unfortenately for everyday Windows Phone users, they won’t be able to use this new Viber app with voice as it is going to be completely exclusive to Nokia Lumia phones. This means that the Viber app will only be able to be found in the Nokia Collection for the foreseeable future, although sources say that the app has been tested work on all sort of Windows Phones.

With over 100 million people using the app, having a fully-function Viber app for the Windows Phone OS should do a whole lot to boost the popularity of the platform. Obviously we won’t be seeing it at an Android level of popularity, but it should at least increase a little bit. The Viber app for Nokia Lumia Phones should be arriving sometime soon on the Marketplace. Some say within the next few days — depending on how fast Microsoft will be able to push the app out at least.

Is anyone interested in this app at all? It sounds quite interesting and might actually be more quality than what the native phone service is. We’ll just have to see how it works out when the app releases.
