Introducing The All New iPod touch

The iPod touch had remained untouched for two. Many thought Apple was ignoring the multimedia device because it planned on discontinuing the product, but far from that, ignoring the iPod touch last year seems like, was planned by Apple, because it had something major planned for the device that does not usually gets its share of limelight. That will not be the case this time. The 5th generation of iPod touch turned out to be dark horse, grabbing as much attention, if not more, as the iPhone 5.

The new iPod touch is different than the earlier generation in many ways. First and foremost is the larger, 4 inch display (this was expected by many). Following that is the new design that does not continue to traditional iPod touch design any longer. From the front, the new iPod touch looks more like the iPhone than ever before.

The new iPod touch is the thinnest iPod touch till date, measuring just 0.24 inch (6.1 mm). The 4 inch Retina display comes with a pixel resolution of 1136 X 640, with a density of 326 pixels per inch. Gone is the steel mirror finish at the back, the new iPod touch gets a more brushed metal texture. The buttons remain the same, but the audio jack has been shifted to the bottom left and of course, it gets the new ‘Lightning’ connector port.

While the introduction of iOS 6 will bring a lot of new features to the iPod, the welcome one is the introduction of Siri. The other major hardware change in the new iPod touch is the iSight camera. It is similar to the iSight camera from the iPhone 5, but the same camera on a sleek and light device like the iPod touch makes a lot of difference. iSight brings with it features such as backside illumination, Hybrid IR filter, LED flash, a microphone, ƒ/2.4 aperture, face detection, Panorama, HDR, full HD video recording etc. The interesting thing here is that Apple is now promoting the new iPod touch as a personal pocket camera by including in the package, an “iPod touch loop.”

The new iPod touch has finally gone multicolor. It is now available in a range of different colors, just like the iPod nano and shuffle. The iPod loop in the package will also match the color of the device. Apple EarPods will be a standard as well.

The battery can power 40 hours of music and 8 hours of video.

With the 5h generation iPod touch, Apple is introducing the dual generation marketing strategy that it follows with the iPad and the iPhone. The 4th generation iPod touch remains, but only the 16GB and 32GB models will be available for $199 and $249 respectively. The new iPod touch will be the higher end device, with the 32GB model costing $299 and the 62GB model costing $399.
