The camera is supposed to launch today, and it’s definitely something that I’m looking forward to. In the meantime, one of the Sony’s retailer, Samy’s Camera, seems to have jumped the guns and has put the camera on pre order already (you can view the product page over here). According to Samy’s, SONY – NEX-5R (BODY ONLY) will be $648 whereas SONY – NEX-5R WITH 18-55MM lens will set you back by $748.
The above specs are of course not official, so take it with a pinch of salt. The NEX-5R is basically a camera that is able to click DSLR quality photos. It has built in Wi-Fi, which means you can share the photos online directly from the camera itself. The camera supports downloadable camera apps, which along 16.1MP APS-C size sensor should help you put your creativity at work. Even though the camera is able to take DSLR quality photos, the whole design is about half the size of a regular DSLR camera. The sensor should deliver breathtaking stills with pro-grade defocused backgrounds.
It’s a great addition to the world of mirror-less cameras. The body has been redesigned to deliver a DSLR like feel, and its functionality is sure to appeal photographers. Users can interchange the lens as well. The 16.1 megapixel APS-C sensor is complemented by ISO sensitivity of up to 25,600. In addition to that, this model has borrowed the 3” display from Sony NEX-F3. The tilt-able LCD display can flip up 180 degrees without sacrificing the device’s compact nature. The screen will be great for clicking self-portraits and should deliver satisfying results as you would know how exactly you look in the frame. Apart from all that, the 99-point phase-detection and 25 contrast autofocus points are something to look forward to. The camera is able to capture HD Movies in super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at Full HD 1920×1080 resolution.
Battery life is a major concern in any electronic device. According to Samy’s, Sony NEX-5R is equipped with InfoLITHIUM NPFW50 (7.2V) battery. Rumors suggest that the device will be able to shoot 400 pictures on a single charge of a full battery, which is awesome. Weighing approx. 9.7 oz (276g) (w/battery & media – body only), this camera should be ideal for people who don’t want to carry a bulky camera around, but would like to keep the power and flexibility of a DSLR.
Sony is expected to announce NEX-6, A99, VG900 and more stuff on September 12th. NEX-6 sounds pretty interesting to me. Nevertheless, Sony NEX-5R will be launching in few hours, so come back for updates.
